Gaelic debating competition under way

A national debating competition in Gaelic is taking place on Lewis.

Pupils from 15 schools from across Scotland are taking part in the first round of the 2009 BT Scotland National Schools Gaelic Debate, which is taking place at An Lanntair in Stornoway.

Four schools will go through to the semi-finals which will be held at the Scottish Storytelling Centre in Edinburgh on the 24th of November.

The final will take place in the Scottish Parliament on November 25.

The event kicks off this afternoon and members of the public are invited to attend the debates.

Chairperson of the BT Scotland National Gaelic Schools' Debate Management Committee Calum Iain MacLeod said: “I would strongly encourage members of the public to go along and support the 2009 Deasbad BT Alba.

"The competition is an excellent showcase of the strength of the debating and communication skills of our Gaelic speaking youngsters and is testament to the fantastic teaching work taking place in our schools."
