Liberal Democrats will discuss their stance on an independence referendum on Saturday.
The party is opposed to such a vote - but activists will consider the issue of independence at a special private session at the party's conference in Dunfermline.
This afternoon's session will allow members to marshal their arguments against independence and also consider the issues and arguments around the Scottish Government's plans for an independence referendum.
A party spokeswoman said: "We're looking forward to the session at conference at the weekend. This will be a chance for party members to have their say about independence."
As it stands current Holyrood arithmetic means the SNP Government has no chance of getting its referendum plan through the Scottish Parliament - with Labour, Tories and the Lib Dems all opposed.
But if the Liberal Democrats changed their stance and supported such a poll, their 16 MSPs would give the SNP a combined voting strength of 63 - just two votes short of a majority.
Delegates at the conference have been told by organisers: "The session will give members the opportunity to consider the issues and arguments around the SNP's current proposals for an independence referendum.
"This work is in support of a wider consultation of members' views being co-ordinated by Ross Finnie MSP at the request of (party leader) Tavish Scott."
It comes after the Lib Dem UK conference in Bournemouth heard calls from one activist, Kevin Lang, of Edinburgh North and Leith, for the party to allow a referendum, saying it could settle an issue "haunting" Scottish politics.
However SNP MSP Alasdair Allan criticised the Liberal Democrats for holding the discussion in private.
The Western Isles MSP said: "A decision on the right of the people of Scotland to have their say over Scotland's future is not something to keep behind locked doors but something all Scotland's people have the right to hear."
However the Liberal Democrat spokeswoman said: "This is a housekeeping conference which was always intended to be held in private."
