A 40-year-old woman and an eight-year-old girl have died in hospital after an early-morning fire at a house in Blantyre.
The emergency services were called to a fire at a house in the town's Devondale Avenue at around 2.15am.
Firefighters rescued both the woman and the girl from the house and they were taken to Hairmyres Hospital where they died a short time later.
They have been named locally as Shirley Schiavo and eight-year-old daughter Taylor. STV News understands that Shirley, a newly-qualified nurse who worked at Monklands Hospital, was married only two months ago. Her husband Alessandro managed to escape from the building before firefighters arrived.
There would appear to be no suspicious circumstances surrounding the fire, however a full investigation will be carried out by Strathclyde Fire and Rescue and Strathclyde Police.
A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.
