Mother demands inquiry after toddler dies after being sent home from hospital

The grieving mother of a toddler who collapsed and died after being sent home from hospital is demanding a full inquiry.

Three-year-old Mackenzie McManus stopped breathing in a Glasgow supermarket 15 minutes after being seen by doctors. She had been taken to the shop to buy a doll for being brave.

Surrounded by cards and flowers, Donna Mcmanus says it still has not sunk in that her daughter is no longer with her. She now knows that Mackenzie died of a severe chest infection but when she first took the three-year-old to hospital on Sunday, doctors diagnosed croup and sent the toddler home after treating her with steroids.

Donna returned hours later as Mackenzie had not improved. This time, she says, doctors assured her that the youngster's cough would clear up on its own and sent her away again.

Donna McManus said: "We were walking out and saying 'this doesn't seem right' because the breathing sounded terrible, it was just a horrible noise."

As Mackenzie was being so brave, Donna said she would buy her a new doll. The toddler was delighted but in the supermarket, she stopped breathing.

Donna McManus said: "She couldn't get any air in, I was panicking and I scooped her out of the trolley. My sister in law was with me, I left her with my sister in law and I was screaming for someone to help, to get a first aider.

"I think if they had kept her those extra 15 minutes, if it had happened in the Southern she would have had more of a fighting chance, there would have been more professional people around at the accident and emergency and that could have prevented it.

"She may still have been here."

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde is now carrying out a review of the care that McKenzie received at the Southern General Hospital. The clinical director of the out-of-hours emergency service described it as a tragic case and said his deepest sympathies were with her family at what must be a terrible time for them.
