Glasgow's most environmentally friendly school, Merrylee Primary in the south side, is celebrating with the opening of its natural play area.

The Urban Jungle features a rope bridge and cargo net, grassy hills, flower gardens and all the play materials are made from wood, vegetation or stone. It is the first time in the UK a natural play area has been attached to a school, and it has been put in place with help from the Forestry Commission Scotland.

Staff, youngsters and their families got involved with the Forestry Commission and played a major role in the design of the play area.

The Urban Jungle sits within the school's eco-friendly ethos and fits in with the design of the school, which is predominately made of wood and insulated with newspapers.  

Councillor Steven Purcell, Leader of Glasgow City Council performed the opening ceremony on Thursday. 

Merrylee Primary was also one of the first schools to install a wind turbine in its playground. It supplies the school with approximately 12% of its electricity.

The turbine is being used as an educational resource for the children of both Merrylee Primary and the adjacent Our Lady of the Annunciation Primary.

There is also an eco-learning corner, where pupils can see the amount of power being generated, the total energy generated and the C02 emissions saved.
