Plans worth more than £10million to transform Dundee's railway station were unveiled on Thursday.

The proposals, with the front of the revampled station pictured above, would improve the existing facilities for train users - including a new first class lounge - as well as shops, office units and a restaurant.

The plans have been prepared on behalf of the Dundee Waterfront Project - a partnership between the city council and Scottish Enterprise - but would have to be agreed and implemented in conjunction with Network Rail, who own the station.

Negotiations between representatives of the project and Network Rail, Transport Scotland and First Scotrail are about to get under way in a bid to secure agreement for the long-awaited upgrading of the station.

If the new proposals are adopted and brought to fruition, a modern station complex will be created along with a redesigned concourse. And while the platform area will remain largely unchanged, there would be a translucent canopy to let in more light and give it a much brighter aspect.

It is understood that work would not get under way until at least 2013.

Dundee City Council's director of city development, Mike Galloway, who is also a member of the Dundee Waterfront Project's board, said the work required would mean the railway line would be closed for a time during the project.

He said it was hoped this work could be carried out at the same time as other work requiring closure of the main line.

As part of the £270million redevelopment of Dundee's central waterfront, the council will be carrying out a programme of road re-alignment and creation of boulevards, including a section running through part of the station concourse.
