Torrential rain to continue as flood warnings issued in parts of Scotland

Drivers have been warned to take care after most of Scotland was put on flood alert.

The Met Office has warned of heavy rainfall and the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (Sepa) is telling drivers to show caution with flooding likely across the country.

Tayside and Lothian are the two areas suffering the worst conditions, with significant downpours and extensive flooding.

It comes after 30 homes had to be evacuated when the Jed Water burst its banks on Sunday. Heavy rainfall caused the overflow which sent torrents of water flooding down Jedburgh High Street.

On Monday, the Met Office issued a series of yellow warnings, alerting people to heavy rain in a number of areas across Scotland. These included Highlands, Eilean Siar, Grampian, Strathclyde, Central, Tayside, Fife, Lothian and Borders.

There are also Sepa flood alerts in place in Aberdeenshire and Aberdeen City, Ayrshire and Arran, Central, Dumfries and Galloway, Dundee and Angus, Edinburgh and Lothians, Fife, Scottish Borders, Tayside, and west central Scotland.

There is severe flooding in Carmunock Road and Kings Park Road in Glasgow.

STV weather presenter Sean Batty said: “Heavy showers are expected to develop once again over central and eastern areas with the worst of these expected around Tayside, Fife, Lothian and Borders. These showers will be slow-moving and torrential at times, giving rise to flooding in places.

“Drivers are advised to take care on the roads due to reduced visibility during these showers.”

However, after another downpour on Tuesday, conditions will improve as the week moves forward.

Sean added: “Showers will ease into tonight; however, a few heavy ones are expected to crop up again tomorrow over Tayside and Aberdeenshire. The weather will quieten down during the week with some very warm conditions expected in the west, with temperatures reaching between 24 and 25 degrees in places by Friday.”
