Three men killed in multiple car pile-up on dual carriageway

Three men were killed and a fourth injured in a multiple car pile-up on a dual carriageway.

The smash happened near the village area of Cumbernauld, in North Lanarkshire, at 12.45pm on Wednesday.

Strathclyde Police confirmed three men had died in the crash on the A8011 Wilderness Brae near to Cumbernauld Theatre.

A fourth man involved in the crash has been taken to Monklands Hospital in Airdrie to receive treatment for his injuries.

Inspector Keith Prentice at the road policing unit at Motherwell is appealing for witnesses and anyone with information to come forward.

He said: "The A8011 is a very busy stretch of road in Cumbernauld which links the town to the M80, and at the time of the crash it would have been busy with vehicles.

"I would urge anyone who may have witnessed the crash and who may have information that can assist with our enquiries to get in touch."

SNP MSP for Cumbernauld and Kilsyth Jamie Hepburn expressed his condolences for the victims' families and added that he wanted to see further safety measures put in place on the A8011.

He said: "This is tragic news and I want to express my condolences the families of the victims at what I can only imagine must be a harrowing time for them all.

"Unfortunately this is not the first time that there has been a serious accident on this stretch of road; indeed, these are not the first fatalities.

"While we must wait for further details to emerge, I will be writing to North Lanarkshire Council - not for the first time - about this stretch of road to request that they look at what further safety measures they can put in place at this location."
