Investigations are continuing following the death of a man at Findochty Harbour in Moray.

The man died following an accident at around 4.40pm on Thursday. The male, who was in his 20s and was on holiday in the area, jumped off the wall into the water below.

Grampian Police have said the man’s death is not being treated as suspicious. It has emerged that several people saw the man and various children jumping into the sea.

Many people tried to save him after his body was seen floating in the water. Amongst them was Nicole Mitchell, 12, who tried to drag him to safety.

Nicole’s mum Alison told STV News: "Nicole swam over and took a hold of his head, noticed blood on face. She knew there was something wrong. She screamed."

The man had been staying at a nearby caravan site with his family after arriving in Finochty a couple of days ago. It is thought his partner and nieces were all nearby when the accident happened. It is understood his family have now left Finochty and are on their way home.

One local councillor has now called on safety improvements to the harbour. Councillor Gordon McDonald, of Aberdeenshire Council, said: "The harbour committee that has been looking at this is concerned because not only are people jumping of the pier at times, but they are jumping in front of boats and that is a serious concern for everybody.

"We are certainly trying to see how we can try and at least educate people. We don’t want to be spoilsports but at the same time there is clearly an inherent danger there."
