Police officer 'drove into seven-year-old girl with marked car'

A police officer is accused of seriously injuring a seven-year-old girl by driving into her with a marked car as she crossed the road.

Gary Johnston, a serving officer with Tayside Police, is accused of driving the Ford Focus police car dangerously while on duty on November 13 last year.

It is alleged Johnston caused the car to collide with a man and his seven-year-old daughter - who cannot be named for legal reasons - on Dundee's Douglas Road.

Prosecutors say the crash caused the pair serious injury.

Johnston, 27, did not appear at Dundee Sheriff Court on Friday to face the charge against him.

Defence solicitor George Donnelly said: "I appear for Mr Johnston and I would be obliged if the case could be continued without plea for three or four weeks. I have further investigations to make into the case."

Fiscal depute Gillian Sim said: "There is no objection from the Crown."

Sheriff Jamie Gilchrist continued the case until mid August.
