Mystery over unidentified man found dead in the Atlantic Ocean

The body of an unidentified man has been recovered from the Atlantic Ocean.

Passengers on a boat docking in the Isle of Lismore on Friday night spotted the body, however police and emergency services were unable to recover the man because of "weather and light conditions".

On Saturday afternoon Strathclyde Police’s Marine Unit recovered the body near to Bernera Bay.

Police said the death is being treated as "unexplained" and appealed for information relating to the identity of the man.

Chief Inspector Brian Auld said: "We are continuing extensive enquiries across Strathclyde and with our colleagues in other Forces across the UK and Northern Ireland to try to identify the man. It is entirely possible that the man was a tourist and therefore I would appeal to proprietors of local B & B's, hostels and hotels for assistance.

"Do you recognise the description of the man's clothing? Did a guest fitting this description mention making a trip from Morar to Fort William on June 26? Has a guest not returned to collect their belongings? I would appeal to anyone with information on the identity of this man to call police so that we can reunite his body with his family."

The man was wearing blue denims with a black leather belt with the name 'Levi' on the steel buckle. He was also wearing a white vest and a dark T-shirt with horizontal pin stripes and black 'worker' style boots. He also had a watch on his left wrist, which is described as having a white metal strap and a black oblong face.

The man also had a wallet with a New Zealand Fern motif and a train ticket issued on Tuesday, June 26, from Morar to Fort William. Anyone with information is asked to contact officers on 01294 404 500.
