Two men have been detained after a 40-year-old man was seriously injured in a street brawl.
The incident happened at around 12.30am on Monday in Angus.
A spokeswoman for Tayside Police said the force and an ambulance were called to the scene at the junction of Montrose Street and Scott Street in Brechin after receiving reports of a disturbance.
She said: "As a result of the incident a 40-year-old man suffered an injury to his body and he is currently in a serious condition at Ninewells Hospital in Dundee.
"As part of ongoing inquiries two men aged 31 and 40 have been detained and they are assisting officers with their investigation."
Tayside Police is appealing to anyone who witnessed the attack or saw anyone acting suspiciously in the area to get in touch.
