Four men tried to con their way into a house by pretending that they were police officers.
At around 2pm on Tuesday the men called at a house on Langmuir Road in Bargeddie, North Lanarkshire.
They said that they were CID officers but when the home owners insisted on being shown ID they left the house and drove off in a blue Ford Focus.
One of the men is described as being between 40-50 years old, around 5ft 7in tall, of medium build and with dark brown hair.
He was wearing a blue baseball cap, black jacket and blue jeans.
He is also described as having "pock marked skin" and a tanned complexion.
The second man is said to be around 30-35 years old, around 6ft tall and of slim build with dark brown hair. He was wearing blue jeans and red trainers.
The third man was around 25-30 years old with black hair and is described as being clean shaven. The fourth man was around 20 to 25 years old.
Chief Inspector Kenny Swan, from Coatbridge Police Office, said: "Impersonating a police officer is a very serious offence and we are conducting extensive inquiries to trace the four men responsible.
"It is clearly unacceptable for unscrupulous individuals to try and con their way into someone's home and try to steal from them.
"I would appeal to anyone who saw men matching the descriptions above to contact me as soon as possible.
“I would also ask anyone who can help identify them or their vehicle to contact Coatbridge Police Office on 01698 202400.
"Alternatively you can contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 if you would prefer to remain anonymous.
"Finally I would like to remind the public to be very careful about whom you let into your home. If someone calls at your door make sure you ask them for identification before you let them in and if you are not 100% happy then do not let them in and call the police."
