Employees at Aberdeen's Remploy factory could be offered a reprieve

A factory in Aberdeen threatened with closure could be offered a reprieve.

Dozens of Remploy factories were closed down when the company announced it was going into liquidation earlier this week.

It was announced on Tuesday that the Aberdeen facility would be saved from immediate closure after 27 other Remploy businesses were axed.

Now Aberdeen MP Frank Doran has been meeting employees at the city's Remploy factory to discuss the future of the centre as a social enterprise hub.

Mr Doran is working with managers and employees to try to salvage the centre’s future.

He said: "The long term aim is to have about six social enterprises working out of the building and it will also have a work experience programme, so that people, some with disabilities, some with other problems, for example, ex-offenders could come here.

“The centre will have a different future if we are successful. We’ve come a long way but have a long way to go and workers are still cautious.”
