Drink-driver broke neck in crash as she made her way home from party

A drink-driver broke her neck when she lost control of her car while making her way home from a garden party.

Heather Jackson appeared in court wearing a neck brace on Tuesday as she admitted drink-driving more than two months ago.

Perth Sheriff Court was told that Jackson sustained serious injuries when she rolled her car while she was more than double the legal alcohol limit.

Jackson, 30, Albert Place, Brechin, admitted drink-driving on the A926 Blairgowrie to Alyth road on May 3 this year. She also admitted driving carelessly and rolling the car after hitting a verge.

Fiscal depute Nicola Manison said: "At about 4pm the accused was at a garden party consuming vodka. At 6.50pm she was driving on the road with a passenger. She lost control and collided with the verge, causing the vehicle to overturn. There was extensive damage to the car and injury to the occupants."

Solicitor Mike Tavendale, defending, said: "She has no memory of this, from two or three days before. She effectively broke her neck and has a compound fracture of the right arm.

"She has had plates inserted and has no feeling or movement in her right arm. She initially spent eight days in hospital and has had another four days since then."

He told the court Jackson had been separated for a year and had "struggled" at times to cope with the two children she looks after.

Sheriff Kevin Veal banned Jackson for 15 months and fined her £250.
