A driver tried to entice an 11-year-old girl in to his car as she walked along a road in Wick.
The man tried to encourage the girl to get into his car in Thurso Road, Wick at around 6.30pm on Sunday.
Northern Constabulary have appealed for witnesses and are trying to trace a car described as a gun metal grey estate with silver alloys.
A spokesman for the force said: "The girl was walking to her friend's house in the area when the incident happened. She ignored the man's request to get into the vehicle and ran to her friend's house, unharmed.
"The driver is described as being around 35-years-old, with short dark brown hair and white stubble on his top lip. He also has a large face, pointed nose and muscular arms. He may be wearing a light green, round necked t shirt with dark blue horizontal stripes and dark blue jeans. He may also speak with an Irish accent."
