More than 30 charged following weekend police operation in Aberdeen

More than 30 people have been charged following a weekend operation by Grampian Police.

Officer launched Operation Diamond on Friday and Saturday night "to make Aberdeen city centre a safer place".

As part of the operation metal detectors were used at the entrances to a number of licensed premises with the aim of detecting and deterring anyone attempting to enter with offensive weapons.

Teams of officers also undertook high visibility and plain-clothes patrols to tackle anti-social behaviour, drug possession and traffic violations.

Four men were charged in connection with possessing illegal substances, 17 people were charged with antisocial behaviour offences and ten charged with road traffic offences.

Constable Sue Stockton said "Police officers, working in partnership with licensed premises and the Unight Group, asked customers to be scanned as a condition of entry.

"The detectors are similar to those used at airports and are extremely sensitive, being able to identify any person in possession of metal items and also indicates the area it is being concealed.

"None of the premises within Aberdeen City Centre including those visited during the operation are considered to have a reputation for customers possessing weapons and I would commend them for taking such a responsible and realistic approach.

"I think the all of these licensed premises are sending an important message to their customers, that such behaviour will not be tolerated."

Those dealt with for alcohol and drug issues were all offered support from outside agencies.

She added: "This operation should serve as a warning that anti-social behaviour and drug misuse will not be tolerated anywhere within Aberdeen. The small amount of individuals who take part in anti social behaviour are not welcome within the City Centre and we will do everything we can to ensure they do not spoil it for others who enjoy everything the City Centre has to offer.

"Grampian Police are committed to ensuring that the public can come into Aberdeen City centre and enjoy a night out safely."
