More than 40 homes in Edinburgh were on the brink of being evacuated on Saturday after on-going flood prevention works struggled to cope with the persistant downpour.

Properties in the Stockbridge Colonies area suffered the worst of the deluge, with Bells Place and Kemp Place bearing the brunt after the Water of Leith burst its banks.

Firefighters used pumps and sandbags to try and stem the flow of water and Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue said it received more than 140 flooding-related calls.

Council teams set up a respite and information centre in Stockbridge Primary School for local residents would did not feel safe in their own homes.

A spokesman for Edinburgh City Council said: "The Council's Flood Prevention team is working with its partners including Lothian and Borders Police to deal with flooding in the Stockbridge colonies, where between 30 and 40 homes have been affected by flooding from the Water of Leith.

"We continue to monitor the situation in conjunction with our partner organisations and would advise anyone with concerns to contact the Council's emergency contact centre on 0131 200 2000."

On Sunday morning, the Scottish Environment Protection Agency lifted all of the 13 flood warnings that were issued across the Lothian and Borders on Saturday.

The council also tweeted a stsus update on Sunday morning, saying: "#edincouncil‬ teams are working hard today to clear mud and debris from flood-hit streets and pavements."
