STV News has learned that two men from Scotland have been arrested in the Dominican Republic for drug smuggling.

It is thought the men are from the Inverclyde area and are awaiting trial after cocaine was allegedly found in their luggage.

The Foreign Office confirmed on Wednesday that two men from Britain have been detained for drug smuggling in the Dominican Republic.

While official confirmation is yet to be announced, it is thought the men are Paul James Cairns and Daniel Andrew Squires from the Inverclyde area.

The men were apprehended as they tried to leave the main airport of Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic on board Thomson flight 127 to Manchester on Tuesday.

The Foreign Office has confirmed that two men from Britain are in custody. 

It has been reported the duo were found with 30 packages of cocaine, 15 bags each, in their luggage which was disguised to look like a well-known brand of local coffee.

The drug has been forensically tested at a laboratory in Santo Domingo and has been confirmed as the Class A drug.
