The driver of a coach full of Scottish schoolchildren on a trip to Alton Towers which was involved in a three-vehicle crash has been arrested.

The 50-seater coach was carrying 40 senior pupils and several teachers from Bannerman High School in Baillieston, Glasgow, who were returning from the school trip.

Some of the passengers were checked by paramedics but nobody was seriously hurt.

The crash happened shortly before 8pm on Monday at a roundabout on the A500 near Audley in Stoke-on-Trent. A black Renault Clio and a black Jeep Cherokee were also in the crash.

The 24-year-old woman driving the Clio was taken to the University Hospital of North Staffordshire with minor injuries. She has been discharged.

The coach driver, 48, from Stirlingshire, was arrested and released on bail pending further inquiries, police said.

A spokeswoman for Glasgow City Council said the pupils and teachers were about 45 minutes into their journey home from the theme park in Staffordshire when the crash happened.

A relief coach was dispatched to take them back to Glasgow.

The spokeswoman said: "Two coaches of Bannerman High School pupils were returning from a school trip to Alton Towers. Almost 45 minutes into their homeward journey the coach carrying the senior pupils was involved in an incident at a roundabout.

"The police and an ambulance attended and thankfully they only had to treat a couple of young people for very minor injuries.

"The police are now investigating the incident and all pupils and staff have arrived safely back at school."

The northbound carriageway of the A500 was closed for about two hours and police are investigating how the collision occurred.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Constable Stephen Crundell at Staffordshire Police on 101, quoting incident number 737 of June 25.
