Three women are in hospital following a head-on crash between two cars.
Emergency services were called to the collision on the A713 near Hollybush, Ayr at around 3.45pm on Saturday.
A Volkswagen Passat and a Peugeot 207 were involved in the crash. The 43-year-old female passenger of the Passat was taken to Ayr Hospital, where the woman remains in a serious condition.
The male driver, also aged 43, was released after treatment for minor injuries.
The 57-year-old woman who was driving the Peugeot is being treated for a back injury, while her 86-year-old passenger sustained chest and leg injuries in the crash.
A spokesman for Strathclyde Police said they are in a "serious but stable condition".
The road was closed for seven hours yesterday while officers examined the scene.
