Waitrose supermarket chain to expand into Glasgow

Supermarket chain Waitrose is to expand its Scottish operation with a new branch in Glasgow to open by November.

The new store will be opened in an existing Somerfield outlet in Byres Road, in the city's West End. There are already two branches of the supermarket chain in Scotland, both in Edinburgh, which were acquired from Somerfield in 2006.

The 70 Somerfield staff at the Glasgow branch will be offered new jobs, and another 50 positions will be created.

Waitrose managing director Mark Price said: "We are delighted to be coming to Glasgow.

"We have wanted to bring Waitrose here for a long time and in Byres Road we are confident we have found a location that will allow us to trade successfully.

"Our objective is always to make a long lasting positive contribution to any area in which we trade and we look forward to serving our new Glasgow customers."

The supermarket chain is owned by the John Lewis Partnership whose workers have a say in its running and receive a share of the profits.

George Ryan, Glasgow City Council executive member for business, said: "Waitrose's arrival in Glasgow will be a very welcome entry into Glasgow's already successful retail market.

"Such a move from a high quality brand presents enhanced variety and choice to those who shop in Glasgow - and a positive boost to the city's economy."
