Aberdeen FC denies reports it will vote against a newco Rangers in the SPL

Aberdeen FC has refuted reports it will vote against a newco Rangers being admitted to the SPL.

Dundee United and Hearts have openly said they will vote against the Glasgow side being allowed to play in Scotland’s top division next season. However, the Dons chairman said his club had to still to reach a decision.

The club reiterated that “sporting integrity” and “fans views” will play a part in its final decision.

All 12 current members of the SPL will cast a vote at a meeting on July 4 and an 8-4 margin in favour is required to allow the new Rangers company to be admitted.

Dons chairman Stewart Milne said: “Contrary to reports, AFC has still to reach a final decision regarding the July 4 vote on the Rangers newco. This is a critical decision which will have major implications for all clubs and the future of Scottish football.

“The views of our fans and the issue of sporting integrity will clearly be a major influencing factor in our decision-making.”

Some SPL chairmen have explained that they have been considering financial implications for their clubs as well as sporting reasons. Mr Milne also took the opportunity to quash rumours the club has been struggling financially.

“There is a great deal of speculation about the future of the game in Scotland flying around at present, however, I can categorically state that any rumours regarding AFC’s financial position are ill-founded and completely wide of the mark,” he added.

“It is irresponsible for anyone to suggest otherwise. The changes announced earlier this week to the board and the executive are intended solely to significantly strengthen the club’s position and help achieve our ambitious future plans.”
