A diver has died after getting into difficulty off the east coast of Scotland.

The 59-year-old man had been diving off Eyemouth, in the Borders, on Saturday afternoon.

He was understood to have been part of a club from Yorkshire.

The alarm was raised by other members of the club when the man surfaced face down and unconscious at around 1.40pm on Saturday.

He was airlifted to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary but was pronounced dead a short time later. His family have been informed.

A second diver, who was 39, was rescued from rocks by Eyemouth lifeboat during the same incident. He was checked at the scene by paramedics but was uninjured.

A spokesman for Forth Coastguard, which coordinated the rescue, confirmed on Sunday: "The diver was taken to hospital but unfortunately he succumbed and died a short time later."
