Detective Inspector Colin Drummond said: "A man has been left critically ill following this attack and it's imperative we trace whoever is responsible.
“Officers are at the scene continuing enquiries to establish what led to the man being injured - he was found seriously injured in the street and I have no doubt that the answer to what happened to him lies within the local community.
“I would appeal to local people to get in touch, our initial enquiries have revealed that there were other people around at the time the incident and I would urge these people to come forward and speak to us.
“Any piece of information could prove vital in our investigation."
