Animal centre makes plea for cat food after stocks run 'extremely low'

High demand: The Drumoak rescue centre is currently caring for 41 felines.

The Scottish SPCA has made an urgent appeal for cat and kitten food, saying its stocks are running "extremely low".

The animal charity’s rescue centre in Drumoak, Aberdeenshire, is currently caring for 41 cats, including 23 kittens.

Debbie Innes, the centre’s assistant manager, admitted staff are struggling to cope with the high demand for food.

She said: "We are going through our cat and kitten food at a tremendous rate and our stocks are extremely low.

"Buying cat food for the volume of animals we're currently caring for is proving to be really expensive and although local supporters are very good at donating food to us, demand is far exceeding supply.

"We have lots of cats nursing kittens right now, which means they remain in our care for at least six weeks until their babies are fully weaned and ready to be rehomed.

"With so many feline mouths to feed our store cupboard is almost bare, so any cat and kitten food donations from local animal lovers would be very gratefully received.”

Anyone wishing to donate cat food can take it to the Aberdeenshire Animal and Rehoming Centre at Drumoak.

The centre is open between 10am and 4pm. They can be contacted via the Scottish SPCA Animal Helpline, which is 03000 999 999.
