Firefighters continue to tackle wildfires in the Highlands as road reopens

On the scene: Firefighters are still tackling the wildfires.

Firefighters in the Highlands have worked overnight to tackle a number of wildfires in the Caithness region.

Over 80 emergency service personnel worked to bring blazes at Canisbay and Killimster under control.

Highlands and Islands Fire and Rescue service have now scaled down the number of appliances at each fire, which had spread for miles on Monday.

Strong winds and dry weather had hampered earlier efforts to put out each blaze.

The fire service said it expects to be at the scene of all the fires "for some considerable time".

However Northern Constabulary confirmed the A99 between Reiss and John O'Groats reopened at 7.15am.
