A pensioner was dragged from her car in an affluent area of Edinburgh before her vehicle was stolen.
The 69-year-old woman was sitting in her silver Honda Civic on Clinton Road, Morningside when a man approached.
He smashed the driver's window and struggled with the woman before pulling her out from behind the wheel and making off with the vehicle.
The car was discovered abandoned nearby in Viewforth Gardens a short time later.
The man has been described as white, aged between 45 and 55-years-old, has a small to medium build with short dark hair, possibly balding. He was clean shaven and wearing blue clothes.
Police have appealed for any witnesses to come forward if they saw a silver car being driven erratically in and around Morningside and Bruntsfield between 2.30pm and 4.30pm on Thursday.
A Lothian and Borders Police spokesman said: "This is a very unusual occurrence within Edinburgh, and we are keen to hear from members of the public who can assist with our enquiries. Although she was not injured, the victim was left extremely distressed and we are engaging closely with the local community to identify the man responsible.
"Anyone with information relating to this incident is asked to contact police immediately."
Anyone with any information can contact Lothian and Borders Police on 0131 311 3131, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
