Specialist officers from the mainland have joined the coastguard and police in Orkney in search of a man who has been missing for nearly a week.

Bob Rose, a 54-year-old widower, has lived on Sanday for about a year. Locals raised the alarm after he failed to show up at a pub - a function of his daily life.

Mr Rose has been missing for five days, leaving his alpacas and pet dog behind. He was last seen on Saturday when he visited the Belsair for a couple of pints and a few games of chess.

Locals are concerned for the man's safety.

Sanday resident George Parker said: "We're concerned that he hasn't been seen because he was a man who's very much a creature of habit. He would be up and down the road at least twice a day.

"He'd either up at his house or up at his alpacas or he'd be down at the Belsair for a pint and a game of chess with the landlord. The fact that he's not been seen is a big concern."

Teams of police dogs and their handlers from Inverness spent Thursday combing the coastline. They joined coastguard crews and Orkney officers in the search.

Police say there is no evidence that Mr Rose left the island but cannot rule out that possibility. They are beginning house-to-house inquiries in an attempt to find the man.
