Banks slammed for underpaying women

Bank bosses are taking heat from Labour for paying women too little.

The party's deputy leader Harriet Harman claims overpaid bank bosses are short-changing female workers.

"Huge bonuses for city bosses are not the only thing wrong with pay in the financial services industry," she said.

"They are also top of the list for treating women employees unfairly. The gender pay gap in financial services is worse than in most other sectors."

Ms Harman, addressed the Scottish Labour conference in Dundee on Saturday, added: "In Scotland, women working in banking and finance companies are paid, on average, 39% less than men.

"Half the people who are working in the financial service sector are women. But nearly all of the bosses are men. Boards are still mostly a no-go area for women.

"We need a real overhaul of the pay and prospects of women in the finance sector. The Equality and Human Rights Commission will be using their legal powers to investigate this.

"I just don't believe women are less committed, less hard-working or less able than men. So they shouldn't be paid less."

The Scottish Labour conference will also hear a keynote address from its leader, Iain Gray, who will announce he has appointed his deputy, Johann Lamont, 51, to become a pensioners' champion.

Her task will be to come up with policies that appeal to older voters, like free bus travel for the over-60s.

Mr Gray will tell the conference in Dundee: "Free bus travel is one of Labour's most popular measures and I want Johann Lamont to produce similar policies to protect the interests of older Scots during this recession."
