First Minister's news conference: Watch live

Alex Salmond: Statement to parliament.

First Minister Alex Salmond is holding a news conference at Edinburgh Castle following the launch of the consultation for a referendum on independence at the Scottish Parliament.

The First Minister told Parliament that the vote will be 'the most important decision by the people of Scotland in 300 years'.

He detailed what he wanted the question to be, and that the Electoral Commission would be appointed to regulate the referendum.

He said eligibility to vote in the referendum would be determined by residency, and that he wanted the vote to include 16 and 17 year olds.

At the news conference the First Minister will face questions from the international media.

This live event has now finished.

Alex is quite correct in pointing out that people living in Scotland should be able to determine their own destiny, by having a Scottish Government (whatever Party) making our own laws, in that way we rise or fall on our own merits. The simple fact is that the people in 1707 didn’t want it,the man on the street did not want the Union, the terms that were agreed were simply thrown in the river Thames by the English Parliament, the equality in voting was one of thee main parts of the Agreement, thrown in the Thames. It’s only natural that a country with more MP’s than its smaller neighbour will vote mainly in favour of their country. We would almost certainly have done the same given the shoe was on the other foot, but I don’t believe that the English people would have put up with Scotland dictating to them for over Three Hundred Years. Since the thirties Westminster has been asked a number of times to consider a Federal System but discussions were never allowed to get off the ground. Now Scotland has taken it into their own hands, to decide for or against the Union, and it is almost certain that this will be the last time we will be allowed a Referendum another 300 years. In Scotland people have for many hundreds of years been able to get married without their parents consent at 16, have children, fight for their Country, why tell me why should these same adults not be allowed to vote in all Elections
