A freight train has derailed at Aberdeen causing major problems with services.

The train came off the line in Aberdeen at around 4.50pm on Wednesday.

The derailment has caused "significant disruption" to cross-country rail services.

Buses have been put on between Stonehaven and both Aberdeen and Dundee.

The heavy haulage train was coming off the freight route and onto the main line when it got into trouble.

A Network Rail spokeswoman said: "It is going to be a significant job.

"At the moment we cannot move anything in or out of Aberdeen.

"Scotrail services are turning at Stonehaven and cross-country services are turning at Dundee.

"There is going to be significant disruption for the rest of the evening.

"We apologise for the disruption and will get it cleared up as soon as possible."

A ScotRail spokeswoman said: "Buses have been ordered to operate between Stonehaven and Aberdeen/Dundee and we have extra staff on the ground to assist customers at stations.

"We apologise to customers for any inconvenience caused by circumstances beyond our control."

Scotrail later confirmed that no services would run between Aberdeen and Stonehaven until around 4pm on Thursday.
