An Aberdeen soldier killed in a fire-fight with the Taliban in Afghanistan has been laid to rest.

Sean Binnie was shot dead while on patrol earlier this month, as he tried to go to the aid of an Afghan comrade.

About 150 people attended the funeral in Belfast on Friday. The 22-year-old soldier was born in Dublin and lived most of his life in Scotland. He settled in Northern Ireland after marrying in December of last year.

His wife, Amanda, threw a white rose on top of his coffin after it was lowered into a grave at Roselawn Cemetery in Belfast.

The young soldier served with the Black Watch, 3rd Battalion the Royal Regiment of Scotland, for six years.

The final tribute from his comrades included the playing of pipes and three volleys of shots fired over the grave.

Corporal Binnie had been in Afghanistan since March, but was shot dead on patrol in Helmand Province as he moved forward to help his comrades in the Afghan Army. He died on May 7.

His family say he died doing something he loved.
