15 years for Aberdeen man who slit victim's throat

A man who slit an Aberdeen father's throat during a brutal murder will serve at least 15 years in detention.

Steven Brady, who has a string of previous convictions, killed his victim less than two weeks after being released from prison.

It was in a flat in Aberdeen's Jute Street in November last year when Steven Brady, who was just 19 at the time, slit his victims throat and stabbed him seven times during a row over a ten pound bag of heroin. Raymond Brennan's body was found two days later.

Police described the attack as despicably violent.

Brady admitted the murder but claimed Brennan had threatened him first. At the High Court in Aberdeen, the judge told Brady he will serve 15 years before being eligible for parole.

Several of Mr Brennan's family and friends were in court. Some of them left unhappy with the sentence.

One said: "To be honest with you, I believe in life for a life and to be honest with you I don't think it has been justified - I really don't."

Another added: "I believe in an eye for an eye - a tooth for a tooth. That's a death. He was a brother to me...he was my cousin.

"Raymond just lived for the day. He was a toff, he was a good guy and he never let any of us down. All of his family...all of us just loved him to bits."

Passing sentence, Lord Brodie said Brady had a very bad record for someone so young - 11 previous convictions in total.

He said this was a very violent attack in circumstances where there was no excuse and little provocation.
