The 23-year-old, from Alford in Aberdeenshire, received the coveted Critics' Choice award at the star-studded event in London on Tuesday night.

The performer was also up for Best British Breakthrough Act, but was pipped to the post by singer Ed Sheeran.

Sande's debut album has just been released and is at number one in the charts.

Speaking after the ceremony, she said: "It feels really good. I'm happy to have this, happy to have the acknowledgement of the Brits and yeah it feels good."

Asked where she was going to keep her award, she replied: "I'm going to put it on top of my piano."
