Man arrested in connection with 'vicious' rape of young woman

A man has been arrested in connection with the rape of a young woman in Aberdeen.

The 22-year-old was attacked at around 7.30am on Saturday near shops on Bedford Avenue in the Powis area of the city.

Police said she had been left "injured and traumatised" by the sexual assault.

On Thursday, Grampian Police said they had detained a 21-year-old man.

More than 130 officers went through thousands of hours of CCTV footage and took statements from 300 local residents.

DCI Martin Dunn thanked members of the local community for their help in the investigation.

He said: "I would particularly like to thank residents in the Powis area of Aberdeen. I appreciate this incident will have had a considerable impact on their daily lives."

The 21-year-old man is expected to appear at Aberdeen Sheriff Court on Friday.
