An Aberdeen man, whose brain tumour was missed despite numerous visits to the doctor, is preparing to go back to work.
GP's thought 24-year-old Scott Findlay only had sinusitis despite suffering severe headaches.
The Aberdeen technician believes he could have died after doctors failed to diagnose the tumour for five months.
He made 15 separate trips to the GP suffering severe headaches, sickness and blurred vision. However, he says doctors, including one consultant, failed repeatedly to realise something was seriously wrong.
“He asked me what I was most worried about and I said I was worried I might have a brain tumour and he said, ‘I'll stop you there. The one thing you don't have is a brain tumour.”
Scott fell ill last December but it was not until June, when he was sent to an optician, that his condition was discovered. Within minutes of having an eye test he was rushed to hospital for a scan and an eight hour operation to remove the non-cancerous tumour.
“If someone comes in with classic symptoms they should do a scan and start off at the worst case scenario and work backwards because then what happened to me wouldn't have happened.”
In a statement NHS Grampian said it is not appropriate to send “everyone with headaches” for a scan.
It added: “Scott's tumour is very rare and can't be easily diagnosed”.
His family insist they won't be suing health bosses but they want to highlight his case to save other lives.
His mother Gail said: “We were devastated…heartbroken. Something needs to be looked into the fact that an optician can pick this up in five minutes but doctors can't.”
Meanwhile Scott is now fully recovered from his ordeal and looking forward to going back to work next week. He is hoping by speaking out he can prevent the same mistake happening to some one else who might not be so lucky.
