A woman's body was recovered from the Moray Firth on Saturday following an extensive search involving police, coastguard and a rescue helicopter from RAF Lossiemouth.
The alert was raised at around 2pm when a body was reported in the water just below the Coastguard station at Burghead.
Rescue 137 was called from RAF Lossiemouth and recovered the body of 27-year-old Michelle Gauld from the water. She was taken to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness but was declared to be dead on arrival.
Ms Gauld is believed to be from the Burghead area.
After the recovery, searches continued in the area for some time following reports that there may have been further bodies in the water.
A spokesman for Grampian Police said: “There was some confusion as to the exact circumstances of the woman coming to be in the sea, and that resulted in further searches being carried out and extensive enquiries by police in the town.”
Police sources said that the death is not believed to be suspicious and enquiries are continuing. A report will be sent to the procurator fiscal in due course.
