Three workmen rescued from cradle on side of university building

Three workmen who were trapped in a cradle about 70ft up the side of Aberdeen University's library have been rescued.

The cradle suffered a mechanical failure around 11.15am on Wednesday, while work was being carried out on the building’s glass façade.

Grampian Fire and Rescue Service attended and sent a height vehicle to the scene.

However a spokeswoman said that the height vehicle was not tall enough to reach the workers and a crane had to be used to free the men after nearly three hours.

The workers were successfully rescued around 2pm.

An area around the front entrance of the library was cordoned off while the operation was carried out.

Students already inside the building were allowed to continue their work.
