Young boy dies after being hit by a van on the outskirts of Aberdeen

A child has died following an accident on the outskirts of Aberdeen.

The child, a boy of primary school age, was involved in the collision with a van around 11.35am on Broadshade Crescent in Westhill.

The Scottish Ambulance Service were called to the scene but were stood down without taking the casualty to hospital.

A Grampian Police spokesman said: "Grampian Police can confirm that a boy has died following a road traffic collision in Westhill.

"The child died at the scene following the collision with a van which happened just after 11.30am on Friday July 20 on Broadshade Crescent, Westhill."

Westhill and District councillor Ron McKail said: “It is tragic news and as a community we are saddened and in shock.

“Our thoughts, condolences and prayers go out to the family and friends. Our thoughts also go to the driver who will have to live with this for the rest of his life.

“It’s very sad news and it will take us a very long time to get over this.”

Broadshade Crescent was closed to allow a collision investigation to take place and police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the collision to contact them.

Inspector Ian Kirkwood said: "This is obviously a very tragic incident and our thoughts and condolences are with the family and friends of the boy who has died.

"Our focus is on finding out how this incident occurred and I would appeal for anyone who witnessed the collision to get in touch with us as soon as possible."

It is the second time that tragedy has struck the residents of Broadshade Crescent this year. In January, emergency services were called to a property on the street after a mother awoke to find her newborn baby was not breathing. Two-month-old Lucas McGonagle later died in hospital.
