Hen harrier chicks nesting in Orkney have become the islands' top TV stars.

Thanks to a tiny camera fitted in their nest - the antics of the fluffy youngsters are keeping visitors enthralled at a local tourist information centre in Kirkwall.

The chicks are proving to be natural performers as the pictures from the nest are fed live to a TV monitor more than ten miles away at the visitor centre.

Barbara Foulkes from VisitOrkney said: “It's been very successful. Locals and visitors enjoy popping in to see how the chicks are getting on.

“It’s been a wonderful partnership between ourselves and the RSPB. It’s reality TV at its absolute best."

The RSPB team involved are more used to watching birds out in the field.

Now volunteers like Norman Slater are using the TV to keep an eye on the chicks.

He said: "A youngster, only three weeks old, trying to eat the leg of a very big bird, much bigger than itself and I was amazed to see it manage to get it down and disappear.

“I thought, it’ll have a tummy upset for a few days after eating that.”

The chicks every move will be watched as the chicks grow to the point where they can finally leave the nest.
