Parts of the Highlands have been devastated by flash flooding.

A stretch of the main A96 road east of Inveness was closed late last night when around 250 tonnes of silt washed onto the road.

BEAR Scotland worked through the night to clear the debris and it was reopened at 10am on Friday morning.

Some drivers were stuck in their vehicles for hours as a result of the deluge.

Heavy rain fell between Inverness and Nairn between 10pm on Thursday until midnight. Flash flooding caused chaos in the town of Nairn and a number of homes suffered damage.

The road to a caravan site at Kerrowaird just off the A96 near Inverness had its path washed away by the flood.

Owner Catherine Bunn said: "The water just kept rising and rising. It was too dangerous to even go out to the sheds to check on things.

"A torrent of water just started coming down through the fences and across the driveway."

Kerrowaird resident Flora Taylor said: "It was dreadful, really dreadful. It just bucketing rain and it was like a burn flowing past my front window. I've never seen rain like it in all the 30 years I've been here”.

Weather forecasters warn that there is more rain to come over the weekend with wet and windy conditions expected to sweep across northern Scotland with locally heavy rain expected across the far north.

STV weather presenter Sean Batty said: "Heavy rain is expected to affect many eastern areas throughout Friday and into Saturday.

"The heaviest of this rain is expected in Fife, Edinburgh, Lothian and the Borders.

"However, Aberdeenshire and Moray may see a few inches of rain from Friday afternoon into Saturday morning."
