A new MacDonald clan banner has been revealed on the 320th anniversary of the Glencoe massacre.

In 1692, 38 members of the clan were killed in their beds by soldiers from the UK government. Captain Robert Campbell led the attack after the clan would not pledge allegiance to King William.

Dozens more died in the cold after running from the troops.

On Monday, members of the MacDonald clan gathered to remember their ancestors who died, saying it was important people did not forget.

Ian Rankine said: "I don’t think people should forget about war or politicians and people committing genocide against their fellow Scots, it’s totally wrong."

The events in Glencoe led to an inquiry and major changes in the way the country was run.

Karin Bowie from Glasgow University said: "There was a parliamentary inquiry; people made all sorts of difficulty for the government minister who was seen to be responsible and the King in London concluded that an independent Scottish parliament was more trouble than it was worth."
