The elusive red squirrel should be easier to spot thanks to a new guide to the best viewing areas across the Highlands.
The north of Scotland is described as the last main refuge of the red squirrel, with non-indiginous grey squirrels threatening the population in many other areas.
The Red Squirrels of the Highlands conservation project has released a new guide highlighting the 12 best sites to see red squirrels in the Highlands.
Juliet Robinson, Forestry Commission Scotland conservation officer, said: "Seeing red squirrels in the wild is a wonderful experience and they have a lot of support and help from their many fans.
"The leaflet lists the best places to go in the area so if you're a fan of red squirrels, get a copy and visit all the sites.
"When it comes to squirrels the Highlands of Scotland is the last main refuge of the red squirrel. This is a grey-free zone, and we'd like to keep it that way. That means doing all we can to help the reds and being vigilant against the arrival of greys.
"Keeping track of the reds and their success is all down to the fantastic volunteers we have who submit records of sightings they make."
Children from Farr Primary near Inverness helped the Forestry Commission launch the initiative at woods where they already feed and monitor the animals on Thursday.
