Electricity is being generated for the first time at a £100m wind farm in the Highlands.

The first two turbines at Gordonbush near Brora have been activated and are exporting power to the national grid.

Work began on the Sutherland wind farm, expected to cost Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) more than £100m, in autumn last year.

Fifteen of the 35 turbines have already been erected and it is hoped construction will be finished by spring 2012.

The windfarm is expected to produce around 180GWh per year.

Jim Smith, SSE managing director of renewables said: "We are delighted to have reached this major milestone at Gordonbush wind farm.

"As the UK’s leading generator of electricity from renewable sources, SSE is committed to helping increase the amount of renewable electricity generation in the UK, and the export of electricity at Gordonbush is a step towards achieving this."
