Warning as heavy snow and ice affect roads across the Highlands

Roads across the Highlands have been affected by snow and ice as temperatures plummet.

Up to four inches of snow was lying in some areas following overnight showers.

Highland Council was warning of ice on roads and said treatment would continue throughout the day.

In the Skye and Lochalsh area one to two inches of snow cover was covering a bed of ice on route while in the Lochaber Area there were widespread ice formations.

Ross and Cromarty saw two to three inches of snow fall at Applecross Beallach with two feet drifting snow hitting some routes and in Caithness and North Sutherland high routes had a snow covering.

At Badenoch and Strathspey one to two inches of snow was covering most areas with three to four inches snow and some drifting reported on the A939 Bridge of Brown Road while at Sutherland and East Ross all routes were affected by snowfall with up to four inches on higher routes.

In Nairn one to two inches of snow was lying on higher roads with ice on lower roads and at Inverness there was a dusting of snow on all roads.

In Inverness and Fort William temperatures will fall to around -3C later on Wednesday while at Thurso and Lochinver the mercury will drop to 0C.

Highland Council reported no schools had been closed as a result of the weather but the local authority did warn motorists to beware of black ice on the area's roads on Thursday.

Richard Guest, head of roads and community works with TEC services, said: “Road surface temperatures are expected to fall as low as minus 8 overnight. A band of rain and snow will pass through the area during the early hours," he said.

“Although salt will be spread on priority routes during the evening we anticipate that there to be some wash-off and the widespread formation of black ice can be expected, which may persist well into tomorrow.

“All available gritters will be deployed from 6am but it will take some time to treat all the routes and motorists are asked to take extra care.”
