Motorists told to be aware as 1000 motorcyclists head to Highlands

Motorcycle rally: Police are advising drivers ahead of Thunder in the Glens this weekend.

More than 1000 Harley Davidson motorcycles will take to Highland roads this weekend as part of an annual event.

Thunder in the Glens will take place from Friday to Sunday in the Badenoch and Strathspey areas.

The event will feature a mass rideout on Saturday when bikes will travel from Aviemore Highland Resort at noon north on the A95 to Lochindorb via Duthil before heading through Grantown on Spey.

There will be a road closure in Grantown High Street from approximately noon until 4pm on Saturday. A diversion will be in place.

A police spokesman said: “Motorists are advised to be aware that all surrounding roads will be busy with motorcyclists over the entire weekend and that they should be aware whilst driving and remain patient.

“The event will cause traffic disruption in the Aviemore and Grantown areas, with road restrictions in place in both towns from 12 noon on Saturday.

“It should also be mentioned that many bikers will stay beyond Sunday and head back down the road, particularly the A9, on Monday.

“Therefore motorists are urged to be aware of large numbers of motorcycles on Monday also. The Monday is also a Bank Holiday and traffic may be heavier than normal. People should plan their journeys before hand and allow plenty of time for travel.”
