Motorist dies in hospital after head-on collision forces Mini off road

A woman has died after a head-on road collision near Stornoway in Lewis.

Three people were taken to hospital after a car crash on the A857 at Newmarket on the Outer Hebridean island on Monday afternoon.

One man and one woman, who were in critical condition, were treated at Western Isles Hospital while awaiting transfer to the mainland.

However, Northern Constabulary confirmed on Tuesday morning that the woman had died from her injuries.

The collision took place by a bend on the road between Stornoway and Barvas at around 3.15pm. A Mini and a BMW crashed and the Mini was thrown off the road, into an adjacent field.

The driver and passenger were trapped inside and had to be cut out by firefighters.

The female driver of the BMW remains in hospital with injuries, including a broken arm, but they are not thought to be life-threatening.

Police said the A857 would remain closed until further notice and an investigation into the cause of the incident has been launched.
