Pensioner in serious condition after fire broke out in bedroom

A pensioner is in serious condition in hospital after a fire broke out in her bedroom.

The 83-year-old woman was injured in the blaze in North Uist on Saturday evening.

Highlands and Islands Fire and Rescue Service said eight firefighters attended the scene of the fire at the two-storey building in Claddach Kyles.

The fire broke out in the bedroom and caused damage to furniture as well as injuring the woman at around 6.30pm.

She has been taken to Broadford Hospital for treatment, while the fire service has launched a joint investigation into the cause of the fire with Northern Constabulary.

A police spokeswoman confirmed that currently there do not appear to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding the bedroom blaze.
