A climber was swept nearly 1000ft over rocky cliffs after causing an avalanche in the west Highlands.

Two climbers on Creag Meagaidh triggered the avalanche on Saturday, which swept one of them over a series of crags.

The climber caught in the avalanche was airlifted to hospital in Fort William while their companion walked down the mountain on the northern side of Glen Spean.

They were helped by the Lochaber Mountain Rescue Team, who returned to the hills on Sunday to rescue three climbers struck on An Garbhanach in high winds.

A spokesman for Lochaber MRT said: "Two climbers on Staghorn triggered an avalanche and one was swept about 300m over crags.

"The avalanched casualty was picked up by R951 and transferred to the Belford Hospital.

"The lead climber managed to down climb to foot of route and was picked up by team members and walked out."

In a separate incident, two climbers were swept around 650ft when they triggered an avalanche on Ben Nevis on Saturday.

The Scottish Avalanche Information Service, which warned of a high risk of avalanches over the weekend, reported the pair were "shocked but okay".
